Tokyo Christmas lights: announced and pending events
In short: Tokyo's free city-center illuminations are concentrated in Marunouchi, Roppongi, Nihonbashi and Yaesu, and the 2026 dates for Marunouchi and Roppongi Hills had not been announced as of October 19.

Tokyo illuminations with announced dates
According to Time Out Tokyo's 2026-27 roundup[5]:
- Tokyo Midtown Yaesu (MIDTOWN YAESU CHRISTMAS): November 19 to December 25, free entry, right next to the Yaesu exit of Tokyo Station.
- Nihonbashi Illumination: November 20 to February 14, 2027, 17:00-24:00, free to view, and easy to walk to together with Marunouchi.
- Tokyo Midtown (Roppongi) MIDTOWN CHRISTMAS: November 26 to December 25, free entry, with an outdoor skating rink and a lawn full of lights in past years.
- Meguro River Illumination (Gotanda): December 4 to December 31, 17:00-22:30, free.
- Yomiuriland Jewellumination: October 29 to April 4, 2027, 16:00-20:30 (varies by period), admission 1,800 yen for adults, 1,500 yen for junior and senior high school students, and 1,000 yen for ages 65 and over and elementary school students and younger; a one-day pass option is also available.
- Sagamiko Illumillion: November 14 to May 9, 2027, with admission from 2,000 to 2,400 yen depending on the period.
Yomiuriland and Sagamiko are amusement-park-style light shows in the suburbs. They are large, but the trip takes over an hour each way, so plan a whole evening for them.
Not yet announced: Marunouchi and Roppongi Hills
The champagne-gold lights on the trees of Marunouchi Naka-dori are Tokyo's signature Christmas image (and this article's lead photo). The 2026 edition had not been officially announced as of October 19, so here is last season's (2025) information for reference: it ran from November 13, 2025 to February 15, 2026, lit from 16:00 to 23:00 (extended to 24:00 in December), along Marunouchi Naka-dori and the area in front of Tokyo Station[6]. The usual pattern is a switch-on in mid-November and an end in mid-February, but check the Marunouchi website for official dates.
The Keyakizaka illumination and Christmas market at Roppongi Hills had also not announced 2026 dates on the official site as of the same day, so watch the Roppongi Hills events page.
You can link Tokyo's districts by subway; for ticket options, see our Tokyo transport guide.
Osaka Christmas lights: Midosuji and Umeda Christmas market
In short: Osaka's Midosuji Illumination is one of the earliest and longest-running street illuminations in Japan, lit from early November and on until late at night every day.

According to Osaka City's press release, Midosuji Illumination 2026 runs from November 3, 2026 (Tuesday, a holiday) to December 31 (Thursday), with lighting from about 17:00 to 25:00, along Midosuji from the Hanshin-mae intersection to the Namba Nishiguchi intersection[3]. The lighting ceremony for "Osaka Hikari-no-Kyoen 2026" is set for November 23 (a holiday) from 17:00 to 19:00, on the stretch from Yodoyabashi to the Semba Chuo 3 intersection[3].
Walking along Midosuji from Umeda to Namba is about 4 km, and you can split it into two sections, "Umeda to Hommachi" and "Shinsaibashi to Namba," shopping and eating along the way.
Umeda Sky Building's "UMEDA SKY BUILDING Christmas 2026" runs from November 13 to December 25, with a 25-meter Christmas tree and LED light sculptures on the first-floor plaza, a Christmas market around it, and an annual limited-edition mug on sale[8]. Check the event's dedicated website for opening hours.
Sapporo and Hakodate Christmas lights: illuminations in the snow
In short: if you want a snowy Christmas, Hokkaido is the easiest place to find one for travelers from Taiwan, but December nights are mostly below freezing.

Sapporo White Illumination and the Munich Christmas Market
The Odori site of the Sapporo White Illumination (さっぽろホワイトイルミネーション) runs in 2026 from November 20 (Fri) to December 25 (Fri), lit from 16:30 to 22:00 and extended to 24:00 from December 23 to 25, covering Odori Park blocks 1 to 5. The organizers note that lighting hours may change without notice[1]. Other sites such as Ekimae-dori and Minami 1-jo continue into later in winter; see the official site for each site's period.
The Munich Christmas Market in Sapporo (ミュンヘン・クリスマス市 in Sapporo), held in Odori Park at the same time, runs from November 20 to December 25 in 2026, 11:00-21:00 (last order 20:45), around Odori Park block 2[2]. You can buy mulled wine, German sausages and Christmas goods.
Hakodate Christmas Fantasy
Hakodate Christmas Fantasy (はこだてクリスマスファンタジー) runs from December 1 to 25 in 2026, in front of the Kanemori Red Brick Warehouses[7], where a giant Christmas tree is erected on the water. The Mt. Hakodate night view is nearby, so you can fit both into one evening; see our Hakodate guide.
Sapporo's December average temperature is about -0.9°C and the average low about -4.0°C[9], so standing outside at night to see the lights feels even colder. For cold-weather clothing and non-slip footwear, read our Hokkaido winter clothing guide. If you plan to return to Hokkaido in February, continue with our Sapporo Snow Festival 2027 guide.
Kobe Luminarie 2027: moved to late January
In short: Kobe Luminarie (神戸ルミナリエ) is no longer held in December, so you won't see it in Kobe in December.
Kobe City announced that the 32nd Kobe Luminarie will run from January 29, 2027 (Fri) to February 7 (Sun), for 10 days, at Meriken Park, Higashi Yuenchi and the former foreign settlement, with part of the Meriken Park site a paid zone[4].
| Paid-zone ticket | Weekdays | Saturdays and Sundays |
|---|---|---|
| Advance ticket | 500 yen | 750 yen |
| Same-day ticket | 1,000 yen | 1,500 yen |
| Group ticket | 400 yen | 600 yen |
Daily lighting hours and the content of the works will be announced separately, according to the Kobe City page, so rely on the official Kobe Luminarie website. During the day you can add the Kitano Ijinkan district and Kobe Harbor; see our Kobe day trip.
What to know about Christmas in Japan
- December 24 and 25 are the most crowded: Christmas Eve in Japan is mainly a couples' holiday, so popular illuminations and restaurants are packed. For photos, avoid those two nights or arrive just as the lights come on.
- Many displays come down after Christmas: if you want lights from December 26, pick events that run into the new year, such as Nihonbashi, Yomiuriland and Sagamiko.
- Year-end opening hours change: from around December 29, shops and sights gradually go into the year-end and New Year holiday, with some closed; see our Japan New Year guide.
- Book flights and hotels early: Christmas to New Year is peak season in Japan, and flights from Taiwan also rise in price, so book 2-3 months ahead.
- Dress for the evening: Tokyo and Osaka are around 5°C at night in December and Hokkaido is below freezing, so at least bring a warm coat and scarf for watching lights outdoors.
FAQ
When do Christmas illuminations start in Japan?
Most cities switch on in mid-to-late November and run until Christmas on December 25, and some events continue into February or even spring. In 2026 Osaka's Midosuji starts earliest on November 3, Sapporo's Odori site on November 20, Tokyo's Nihonbashi on November 20 and Tokyo Midtown Yaesu on November 19.
Do Japan's Christmas illuminations require tickets?
Street-style displays such as Marunouchi, Midosuji and Sapporo Odori are free. Amusement-park displays need a ticket; for example Yomiuriland's Jewellumination starts at 1,800 yen for adults, and Kobe Luminarie has a paid zone at Meriken Park, with same-day tickets at 1,000 yen on weekdays and 1,500 yen on weekends.
Where are the best Christmas lights in Tokyo?
For a first visit, Marunouchi Naka-dori, Roppongi Hills Keyakizaka, Tokyo Midtown and Nihonbashi are all in the city center, free and reachable by subway. For a huge sea of lights, try Yomiuriland or the Sagamiko illumination, but they require tickets and a longer trip. The 2026 dates for Marunouchi and Roppongi Hills are still to be announced on their official sites.
Is Kobe Luminarie still held in December in 2026?
No. In recent years Kobe Luminarie has moved to late January. The 32nd edition is confirmed for January 29 to February 7, 2027, for 10 days, at Meriken Park, Higashi Yuenchi and the former foreign settlement, with part of Meriken Park charging admission. You won't see Luminarie in Kobe in December.
Is Sapporo cold at Christmas?
Yes. Sapporo's average temperature in December is about -0.9°C and the average low about -4°C, and it feels colder while you stand watching lights at night, with roads often icy. Bring a down jacket, gloves, a hat and non-slip shoes; see our Hokkaido winter clothing guide for details.
