Quick answer

Hakodate's highlights are the Mt. Hakodate night view, the Morning Market, Goryokaku and the Motomachi and bay area; plan 2 nights. The ropeway costs 1,800 yen round trip for adults and runs until 21:00 from October 1, but it is closed for legally required inspection from October 20 to November 8, 2026. During that time take the Mt. Hakodate climbing bus (700 yen one way). The mountain road closes for winter from November 9. Goryokaku Tower costs 1,200 yen. From Sapporo, the Limited Express Hokuto takes about 3 hours 50 minutes and costs 9,770 yen.

Hakodate's highlights come down to four keywords: the Mt. Hakodate night view, the Hakodate Morning Market, Goryokaku, and the old buildings of Motomachi and the bay area. This port town at the southern tip of Hokkaido was one of the first cities in Japan opened to foreign trade, and its Western-style churches, red brick warehouses and sloping streets make Hakodate feel very different from Sapporo or Otaru. This guide covers fares and hours for each sight (confirmed October 2026) and the smoothest way to get around Hakodate, with a special warning about the Mt. Hakodate Ropeway closure from October 20 to November 8, 2026 and how to get up the mountain instead, so you can plan your Hakodate trip without surprises.

How Many Days in Hakodate? Sights and Timing Overview

In short: plan 2 nights. Go up Mt. Hakodate for the night view on the evening of day one, visit the Morning Market early on day two, and see Goryokaku and the Motomachi and bay area during the day, and you will have covered the main Hakodate sights. If you come by JR from Sapporo, it is almost 4 hours one way, so a same-day round trip is very rushed.

Mt. Hakodate Night View: Ropeway Fares, Hours and the 2026 Closure

The Mt. Hakodate night view is often counted among the "three great night views of the world," alongside Hong Kong and Naples. From the 334-meter summit, the city lies between two bays, creating a distinctive waist-shaped outline of lights.

Mt. Hakodate Ropeway Fares and Hours

According to the official Mt. Hakodate Ropeway website (confirmed October 2026)[1]:

  • Fares: Adults (junior high school and older) 1,800 yen round trip, 1,200 yen one way; children 900 yen round trip, 600 yen one way.
  • Hours: April 20 to September 30, 10:00–22:00 (last ascent 21:30); October 1 to April 19, 10:00–21:00 (last ascent 20:30).
  • Frequency: about every 15 minutes, every 5–10 minutes when crowded; the ride takes about 3 minutes.
  • The ropeway's base station is within walking distance of the "Jujigai" tram stop.

What to Do During the October 20 to November 8, 2026 Ropeway Closure

The Hakodate City official tourism site Hakobura announced that the Mt. Hakodate Ropeway is closed for legally required inspection from Tuesday, October 20 to Sunday, November 8, 2026[2]. To see the Hakodate night view during this period, you can:

  1. Take the Mt. Hakodate climbing bus: It departs from Stop 4 at the Hakodate Station bus terminal and goes up through the bay area, taking about 30 minutes without traffic. It costs 700 yen one way for adults and 350 yen for children, and extra departures are added during the closure[2].
  2. Reserve a taxi: You cannot call a taxi from the summit, so reserve a round trip or take the bus down.

In addition, during the night-view hours (16:00–21:00 from October 1 until the winter closure), the mountain road is closed to general vehicles, so if you drive or rent a car you must park at the foot of the mountain and take the bus or ropeway[2].

Visiting Mt. Hakodate in Winter

The Mt. Hakodate climbing road is closed every year from 11:00 on the second Monday of November until 11:00 on the second Monday of April. During that time the climbing bus does not run, and neither taxis nor private cars can go up, so the ropeway is the only way[2]. In 2026, that means that from November 9 the ropeway is the only way up. The summit is windy in winter and the wind chill is very low, so dress warmly; see what to wear in Hokkaido in winter.

Hakodate Morning Market: Hours and What to Eat

The Hakodate Morning Market is next to JR Hakodate Station, about a 1-minute walk from the exit, and is a large market area of seafood shops, dried goods and souvenir shops, and eateries.

According to the official Hakodate Morning Market website, the market is open every day of the year (shop closing days vary), and is open from about 6:00 to just after 14:00 from January to April, and from about 5:00 to just after 14:00 from May to December[3]. Eateries open early in the morning, while some souvenir shops open after 9:00.

Ways to enjoy the Morning Market:

  • Seafood rice bowls (donburi): The Morning Market's most famous meal, often with squid, sea urchin, salmon roe and crab. "Donburi Yokocho Market" has a cluster of eateries.
  • Catch-your-own squid (ika-zuri): At "Ekini Market" you can fish a squid out of a tank yourself and have the shop slice it into sashimi, an experience unique to Hakodate. Seasons and prices depend on the shop.
  • Grilled seafood and crab: You can order and have them grilled on the spot, which also suits older relatives and children.

We suggest going on the morning after you stay in Hakodate. Eat a light hotel breakfast, or skip it, and head straight to the Morning Market for a seafood rice bowl.

Goryokaku: The Star-Shaped Fortress and Goryokaku Tower

Goryokaku is a Western-style star-shaped fortress built at the end of the Edo period, now Goryokaku Park, beautiful with cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves in fall. To see the whole star shape clearly, go up the observation deck of the neighboring Goryokaku Tower.

According to the official Goryokaku Tower website (confirmed October 2026)[4]:

ItemDetails
Observation deck admissionAdults 1,200 yen, junior and senior high school students 900 yen, elementary school students 600 yen, free for preschool children
Hours9:00–18:00 (last ticket sales 17:50), open every day of the year
AccessGet off at the Hakodate tram stop "Goryokaku Koen-mae" and walk

The Goryokaku Tower website also announces that observation deck prices will change on April 1, 2027; check the official site for the new prices.

We suggest going up the tower first for the panorama, then coming down to walk in the park and visit the restored Hakodate Magistrate's Office (Hakodate Bugyosho).

Motomachi and the Bay Area: Hachimanzaka, Churches and Red Brick Warehouses

Motomachi, at the foot of Mt. Hakodate, is the most exotic part of Hakodate, with Western-style churches and mansions scattered along the slopes:

  • Hachimanzaka: A paved slope that runs straight to the harbor and is Hakodate's most iconic photo spot. In winter the trees on both sides of the slope are lit up.
  • Hakodate Orthodox Church (Hakodate Haristos Seikyokai): A church with white walls and a green roof, which together with the nearby Catholic Motomachi Church and the Hakodate St. John's Church forms the Motomachi church cluster.
  • Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward: A yellow-and-blue Meiji-era Western building, with a view over the harbor from the front.
  • Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse: A shopping complex converted from a row of red brick warehouses in the bay area. It looks lovely with the harbor at dusk once the lights come on, and often has Christmas decorations in winter.

Motomachi and the bay area can be linked on foot. The smoothest route is to walk down from Motomachi to the bay area in the afternoon, then go up Mt. Hakodate for the night view in the evening.

Hakodate Transport: Getting There from Sapporo and the Airport, and Getting Around

Getting to Hakodate from Taiwan, Sapporo and Tokyo

Starting pointMethodTimeAdult one way
Taipei (Taoyuan)Direct flight to Hakodate Airport (STARLUX and others)About 3.5 hoursDepends on the airline
SapporoJR Limited Express HokutoAbout 3 hours 50 minutes9,770 yen
Shin-Hakodate-HokutoJR Hakodate Liner15–23 minutes470 yen
Hakodate AirportAirport shuttle busAbout 20 minutes700 yen
  • Direct flights (for travelers from Taiwan): Aviation Wire reports that STARLUX's Taipei (Taoyuan)–Hakodate route increases to daily in the winter 2026 timetable (October 25 to March 27, 2027)[8]. For whether other airlines fly the route, check each airline's announcements.
  • From Sapporo: The Limited Express Hokuto is all reserved seating, and a Sapporo–Hakodate round trip comes to nearly 20,000 yen. If your trip also includes Sapporo, Asahikawa and other places, you can use the JR Hokkaido Rail Pass. For a comparison, see Hokkaido without a car.
  • From Tokyo: Take the Hokkaido Shinkansen to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station, then transfer to the Hakodate Liner to Hakodate Station[9]. Note that the JR Hokkaido Rail Pass does not include the Hokkaido Shinkansen.
  • Airport: According to the Hakodate Airport website, the shuttle bus toward Hakodate Station takes about 20 minutes and costs 700 yen for adults[7]. The airport is close to Yunokawa Onsen, so staying at a hot spring inn on your last night before a flight is also convenient.

Hakodate Trams and Day Passes

Sightseeing within Hakodate mainly relies on the Hakodate tram (streetcar). According to the Hakodate City Transportation Bureau, from December 1, 2025 the adult fare is 250 to 300 yen one way (depending on distance), paid when you get off, and nationwide interoperable transport IC cards such as Suica and Kitaca can be used[5].

Main discount tickets (confirmed October 2026)[6]:

  • Tram-only day pass: Adults 800 yen, children 400 yen; the paper version can be bought on board, and there is also a mobile version.
  • Tram 24-hour pass (mobile version): Adults 1,130 yen.
  • Tram and Hakodate Bus shared day pass (mobile version): Adults 1,600 yen; 2-day pass 2,600 yen.
  • Note: Since April 2025, the shared tram and bus pass can no longer be used on the Mt. Hakodate climbing bus[6].

If you ride the tram back and forth between the Morning Market, Goryokaku, and Jujigai (Motomachi and the ropeway) in a day, the day pass pays for itself quickly.

How to Plan Hakodate Smoothly

Sample 2 days 1 night (from Sapporo):

  1. Day 1 morning: Take the Limited Express Hokuto from Sapporo, arrive in Hakodate in the afternoon, and leave your bags at the hotel.
  2. Day 1 afternoon: Take the tram to Jujigai and walk Motomachi, Hachimanzaka and the Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse.
  3. Day 1 evening: Go up Mt. Hakodate for the night view (by ropeway, or by climbing bus during the closure).
  4. Day 2 early morning: Seafood rice bowl at the Hakodate Morning Market.
  5. Day 2 morning: Tram to Goryokaku Koen-mae and go up Goryokaku Tower.
  6. Day 2 afternoon: Return to Sapporo, or leave from Hakodate Airport.

If you have an extra day, add Yunokawa Onsen or go north to Onuma Quasi-National Park. For more Hokkaido sights, see the Hokkaido travel overview and sightseeing topics. For what to eat after you return to Sapporo, see the Sapporo food guide.

Before You Go

  • The ropeway is closed from October 20 to November 8, 2026. If you visit Hakodate during this period, take the climbing bus. From November 9 the mountain road is closed and only the ropeway runs.
  • The Mt. Hakodate night view depends heavily on the weather, so staying 2 nights gives you a second chance.
  • Fares and hours in this article were confirmed in October 2026. Check the ropeway, Goryokaku Tower and tram official sites again before you leave.

FAQ

What is the best time to see the Mt. Hakodate night view?

Go up about 30 minutes before sunset so you can watch the change from dusk through the blue hour to the full dark night view. In autumn and winter the sun sets early, so you need to leave at around 4 p.m. In peak season the observation deck is very crowded around sunset, so arrive early if you want a front-row spot.

How do I get up Mt. Hakodate in autumn 2026 when the ropeway is closed?

The Mt. Hakodate Ropeway is closed for legally required inspection from October 20 to November 8, 2026. During that time, take the Mt. Hakodate climbing bus from Stop 4 at the Hakodate Station bus terminal (700 yen one way for adults, about 30 minutes), with extra departures added. You can also reserve a taxi, but you cannot call one from the summit.

Can I see the Mt. Hakodate night view in winter?

Yes, but only by ropeway. The Mt. Hakodate climbing road is closed every year from 11:00 on the second Monday of November until 11:00 on the second Monday of April, and climbing buses, taxis and private cars cannot go up. After the 2026 ropeway inspection ends (from November 9), the ropeway is the only way up.

What time does the Hakodate Morning Market open, and how early should I go?

The official Hakodate Morning Market website says it is open every day of the year, from about 6:00 to just after 14:00 from January to April and from about 5:00 to just after 14:00 from May to December, with hours varying by shop. Food stalls open early in the morning, while some souvenir shops open after 9:00. For a seafood rice bowl, aim to arrive by 8:00 to 9:00.

How do I get from Sapporo to Hakodate, and how long does it take?

The most convenient way is the direct JR Limited Express Hokuto, about 3 hours 50 minutes, 9,770 yen one way for adults (reserved seat, checked on a weekday in October 2026). If you will also travel around Sapporo and Hakodate and need airport transport, the JR Hokkaido Rail Pass 5-day ticket (22,000 yen when purchased overseas in advance) is usually better value.

How much is the Hakodate tram day pass, and is it worth it?

The tram-only day pass is 800 yen for adults and 400 yen for children, and can be bought on board. A single tram ride costs 250 to 300 yen, so three or more rides in a day pay for the pass. The tram also accepts Suica and other transport IC cards.
