Quick answer

Uji is about 17–30 minutes from Kyoto Station on the JR Nara Line. The must-see is Byodo-in (garden 8:45–17:30, adults ¥700). Entering the Phoenix Hall costs another ¥300 and, from October 16, 2026, runs every 20 minutes with 35 people per slot, so collect a time ticket as soon as you enter. Then walk the Uji River and Ujigami Shrine, and have matcha at Tsuen (founded 1160) or Nakamura Tokichi Honten.

A day trip to Uji is one of the easiest half-day or full-day outings from Kyoto. In under 30 minutes by train you can see the Byodo-in Phoenix Hall printed on the ¥10 coin, stroll along the Uji River, and eat matcha desserts at old tea shops in a town known for tea for a thousand years. This guide covers a recommended walking route, Byodo-in admission and the latest Phoenix Hall interior rules (fewer places from October 2026), historic matcha shops and experiences, and how to get to Uji from Kyoto and Osaka.

Uji day trip route: see the main sights in half a day

In short: collect your Phoenix Hall interior ticket at Byodo-in first, then walk along the Uji River to Ujigami Shrine on the opposite bank, and finish with matcha around Uji Bridge.

The whole route is roughly 3-4 km on flat ground, so it suits older travelers and children. With only half a day, you can just do Byodo-in, the Uji River and a matcha shop. For a southern Kyoto day, start with Fushimi Inari Taisha in the morning; see Kyoto attractions.

Visiting Byodo-in: admission and Phoenix Hall interior rules

In short: adult admission to Byodo-in is ¥700, and the Phoenix Hall interior costs an extra ¥300 with a time ticket bought on the spot. From October 16, 2026 each tour is smaller, so in peak season get your ticket as soon as you enter.

Byodo-in dates from the Heian period. It began as a villa of Fujiwara no Michinaga, and in 1052 his son Fujiwara no Yorimichi converted it into a temple. The Amida Hall completed the following year is today's "Phoenix Hall", symbolized by the pair of golden phoenixes on its roof. Byodo-in and Ujigami Shrine are both part of the "Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto" World Heritage site.

According to the official Byodo-in site, hours and fees are as follows[1]:

ItemHoursFee
Garden (including Hoshokan)8:45-17:30 (last entry 17:15)Adults ¥700, junior and senior high school students ¥400, elementary school students ¥300

How to enter the Phoenix Hall

  1. Buy a garden ticket and enter.
  2. Go to the interior tour desk (naibu haikan uketsuke) in the garden to buy a time ticket (sales start at 9:10, first come first served, until tickets run out).
  3. Arrive at the meeting point 5 minutes before your slot, and a staff member will take you inside to see the national treasure Amida Nyorai statue by Jocho up close.

Byodo-in announced that from October 16, 2026, the number of people per interior tour drops from 50 to 35, so waits in the spring and autumn peak seasons will be longer than before[2]. Re-entry to Byodo-in is normally not allowed, but if you hold an interior tour ticket you may show it to the gate staff and re-enter before your tour starts, so you can go and eat nearby while you wait. Once the interior tour ends you cannot re-enter, and a missed slot cannot be changed or refunded[2]. For autumn foliage information in Kyoto, see Kyoto autumn leaves 2026.

Walking the Uji River: Uji Bridge, Asagiri Bridge and Ujigami Shrine

In short: both banks of the Uji River make Uji's most pleasant walk. It takes only 10-15 minutes from Byodo-in to Ujigami Shrine, with views of the fast river and distant hills along the way.

  • Uji Bridge: the bridge across the Uji River linking the JR and Keihan Uji Station sides is considered one of Japan's oldest, and a key setting of the "Uji Chapters" of The Tale of Genji. The old tea shop Tsuen stands at its east end.
  • Nakanoshima (Tachibana Island and Tou-no-shima): walking upstream from the Byodo-in approach, you can step onto the islands in the river, where a thirteen-story stone pagoda is a landmark of the Uji River.
  • Asagiri Bridge: a vermilion bridge connecting Nakanoshima with the east bank. Stone statues of characters from the Uji Chapters stand at the bridgehead, making it a popular photo spot.
  • Ujigami Shrine: across the river from Byodo-in, its main hall is considered the oldest surviving shrine building in Japan and is a World Heritage site. The grounds are plain and quiet, in contrast to the splendor of Byodo-in.
  • The Tale of Genji Museum, Uji: introduces The Tale of Genji and the Uji Chapters with models and video. Open 9:00-17:00 (last entry 16:30), closed Mondays (the next day if Monday is a holiday)[6]. Admission is listed differently on different sites, so check the museum's own site.

In autumn, the maples along Kotosaka, the approach to Kosho-ji on the east bank of the Uji River, turn red, making it one of Uji's best foliage spots.

Historic matcha shops and experiences in Uji

In short: for matcha desserts, choose Nakamura Tokichi Honten or Tsuen; for a proper tea-making experience, go to the municipal tea room Taihoan.

Uji is Japan's most representative producer of high-grade tea. Tea shops stand one after another along the Byodo-in approach and the Uji Bridge shopping street, selling matcha, gyokuro, sencha and all kinds of matcha sweets.

  • Tsuen Tea: an old tea shop at the east end of Uji Bridge. Its official site says it was founded in the first year of Eiryaku (1160), and that the first proprietor reportedly built a hut at the east end of Uji Bridge to serve tea to travelers. It still operates in a building in Edo-period style[3].
  • Nakamura Tokichi Honten: a tea merchant founded in 1854. Its Uji main shop near JR Uji Station has an in-house dessert area, with matcha jelly and matcha parfaits as signatures; on weekends you often have to wait for a seat.
  • Taihoan (Uji City tea room): a teacher of the tea ceremony prepares tea for you in the tea room. Usucha and sencha cost ¥1,000 each, gyokuro ¥1,400, and the tea-making experience ¥2,400. Open 10:00-16:00. Some experience plans require booking 3 days ahead, and same-day tickets are sold at the neighboring Uji City Tourist Center[4].

For matcha desserts and Kyoto cuisine beyond Uji, see Kyoto food guide.

Getting to Uji from Kyoto and Osaka

In short: from Kyoto Station, the JR Nara Line is most direct; from Gion or Kawaramachi, take the Keihan line; from Osaka, take the Keihan Main Line and change to the Uji Line.

It is about a 10-minute walk from JR Uji Station to Byodo-in, and from Keihan Uji Station you cross Uji Bridge to reach the Byodo-in approach. The digital Keihan Kyoto One-Day Pass (adults ¥1,100) covers the section from Iwashimizu Hachimangu to Demachiyanagi plus the Uji Line[5], so it is worth comparing if you plan to go from Gion to Fushimi Inari and then to Uji in one day. IC cards (ICOCA, Suica) work on both JR and Keihan, and for a comparison of Kyoto tickets see the Kyoto transport guide.

Tips before your Uji day trip

  1. Get your ticket before you explore Byodo-in: interior tour capacity has dropped since mid-October 2026, so the first thing to do after entering is collect a time ticket.
  2. The museum and some shops close on Mondays: the Tale of Genji Museum is closed Mondays, so if you are going on a Monday, visit the Byodo-in Hoshokan instead.
  3. Store matcha souvenirs carefully: matcha powder oxidizes easily once opened, so buy small packs and keep them in your suitcase away from moisture. If you are travelling back to Taiwan, also check the entry rules for bringing food home.
  4. Start early in peak season: during the autumn foliage season and Golden Week, Byodo-in and Nakamura Tokichi Honten can have long queues, and arriving before 9:00 is easiest.
  5. A stop on the way back: in the evening, get off the Keihan line at Chushojima and explore Fushimi's sake brewery district before returning to the city. For a convenient base, see where to stay in Kyoto.

FAQ

How much time do I need for a day trip to Uji?

The main sights are clustered on both banks of the Uji River, so half a day (about 4-5 hours) is enough for Byodo-in, Ujigami Shrine and a matcha shop. Add the Tale of Genji Museum, a tea experience or an evening stroll and a full day feels more relaxed. You can also pair Fushimi Inari in the morning with Uji in the afternoon.

How do I reserve a Byodo-in Phoenix Hall interior tour?

You cannot book online. After entering the garden, buy a time ticket at the interior tour desk inside the grounds. Sales start at 9:10 on a first-come basis and end when slots run out. Tours run every 20 minutes, with 35 people per slot from October 16, 2026, and cost an extra ¥300. Gather 5 minutes before your slot.

Should I take JR or Keihan from Kyoto to Uji?

From Kyoto Station the JR Nara Line is the easiest: about 17 minutes by rapid train or 30 minutes by local. If you are staying around Gion or Sanjo, take the Keihan line and change at Chushojima to the Uji Line, about 30 minutes. Keihan Uji Station is slightly closer to Uji Bridge and Byodo-in.

Which matcha shops in Uji are recommended?

The best known are Tsuen Tea beside Uji Bridge (founded 1160) and Nakamura Tokichi Honten (founded 1854), both of which serve desserts in-house. To try making tea, visit the municipal tea room Taihoan, where usucha starts at ¥1,000. Shops along the approach to Byodo-in sell matcha souvenirs.

What can I combine with Uji on a Kyoto day trip?

Uji and Fushimi Inari Taisha both lie along the JR Nara Line and Keihan line, so the most common combination is Fushimi Inari in the morning and Uji in the afternoon. The JR Nara Line also continues south to Nara, but if you want to see both properly, split them over two days.
